Part-time Museum Assistant

Hours: 30 – 40 per month

Schedule: Some flexibility with two Saturdays required monthly. Work during special events is required.

Pay: $9.00 per hour

Reports to: Museum Director


General Job Description

The Sutliff Museum is seeking a creative, flexible, and enthusiastic individual with and interest in public history and museum and a commitment to excellent visitor services for the position of Museum Assistant. Under the supervision of the Museum Director, the Museum Assistant is responsible for assisting with collections management, curation, research, and outreach at the Sutliff Museum located in Warren, Ohio.


Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist Director with the research, development, and implementation of changing exhibitions and collection rotations
  • Perform tasks related to the creation and maintenance of the collections catalog, the physical inventorying of objects, and records management related to the collections.
  • Promote volunteering through outreach to community, organizations, groups, and individuals and use social media and other tools to locate potential volunteers.
  • Assist in publishing quarterly newsletter, Musings.
  • Perform other duties as required.


Minimum Requirements

Bachelor's degree and/or one year of related experience or a combination of education and relevant experience. Preference given to those seeking a degree in museum studies, conservation, anthropology, or a related field, as well as to specialized collections-based degree training (example, MA and/or certificate program in museums) or the equivalent experience.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of relational database software required, working knowledge of PastPerfect preferred.
  • Ability to research a topic and effectively write, and speak on the subject.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and professionalism to interact with a wide range of people at different levels of an organization.
  • Project management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to handle fragile and culturally sensitive collections in keeping with accredited museum standards.
  • Ability to work with sensitive and confidential content in a respectful and trustworthy manner.
